Dr. Carl Freeman Gustafson is a licensed clinical psychologist who works full time in the West Barnstable office. He offers a variety of services for individuals, families and businesses in the community.
Neuropsychological Testing:
One of the specialties that Dr. Gustafson offers is in neuropsychological testing. This comprehensive testing provides summary information about overall functioning. This includes:

Comprehensive Assessment :
Another service that can be helpful is his three session “Comprehensive Behavioral Assessment.” Dr. Gustafson will review clinical or educational records, review the family history and explore the factors that are currently involved. He utilizes quantifiable measures (like the Symptom 90 Checklist or the Achenbach Behavioral Health Checklist) to help clarify the severity of the concerns. He will review his findings with you and generate a written assessment which will include diagnostic impressions, behavioral health functioning, recommendations for care, and a working treatment plan for your primary care or prescribing physician.
Counseling Services:
Children, adolescents and adults can be seen for counseling services. Individual, couple and family therapy is offered utilizing a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach.
Sports Psychology:
Dr. Gustafson can work with individuals, teams or trainers. He is an avid runner who has completed 24 marathons in 22 states. He has coached numerous youth sports including baseball, cross country skiing, basketball, and soccer. He is a member of Division 47, Sports Psychology, of the American Psychological Association. He wrote his Master’s Thesis in applied sports psychology entitled “The Effects of Running on Empathy and a Sense of Well-Being.”
Some of the most frequent issues addressed include goal setting, performance enhancement, managing anxiety and stress, coaching and leadership support, and mental skills training. Individuals should be aware that these services are often not covered by insurance coverage.
Executive Coaching:
Dr. Gustafson can provide consultation services or seminars on “Time Management” and “How to Motivate Yourself and Motivate Others,” and other topics. In 2007 he provided training for the Southeastern Food Allergy Association, presented for the second year in a row at the Statewide Suicide Prevention Conference and provided repeat training on psychological services to medical interpreters. Known as a dynamic group and public speaker he would enjoy working with you to structure motivational or training support for your business or group.

About Dr. Gustafson:
Dr. Gustafson has been in practice since 1991 and a member of the American Psychological Association since 1995. He accepts all insurances including Blue Cross, Medicare and Mass Health.
Dr. Gustafson is a graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. He was an Honors graduate at Fairfield University, was Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He attended Radcliffe’s Publishing Procedures Course and worked in publishing in New York City. For six years he worked as a Financial Consultant at Merrill Lynch in Connecticut. He moved back to Cape Cod and completed a Master’s Degree at Bridgewater State College in Clinical Psychology. He completed his Doctorate at Antioch New England Graduate School in Clinical Psychology.
